About the Craftsman

Woody J’s Design was created by Joe Ryan to encompass his custom pen and framing business. Joe has resided in and around Beach Haven, New Jersey for the last thirty years working in the building trades. His training and eye for detail eventually took him to the restoration of historical structures including the original first aid station in Beach Haven.

His picture framing is a natural progression from carpentry and merges with art. The style is utilitarian, materials are reclaimed and every frame is unique. The work is custom, precise and sturdy. Frames with photographs of local interest are available, and some have graced the work of fine artists in local and not-so-local galleries. Whether it's an image or a mirror, Joe's frames make them and the walls they hang on look better.

Recently, Joe has expanded his wood expertise to penmaking. He says “I started making pens by accident. I had a gift card and bought a lathe. I don’t know why because I had never used one.” After that he was hooked, expanding his business to custom pens.

“As an artist, I get pulled in different directions. When that happens I go with it. I love making things with wood. I’ve been involved with woodworking from a very young age” Joe says.
